Deciding To Home School or Not? Consider These Advantages

It is evident that the dampening down of our nations public school system has turned homeschooling into a growing trend. The consensus amongst many parents is that if you value quality education, flexibility, learning in the real world and most importantly family time, then homeschooling is for you. However, many parents are still trying to determine if homeschooling is right for their child. In order to make this decision it is important that the advantages and disadvantages of homeschooling be taken into consideration, along with some other important issues.

First and foremost, parents must realize that homeschooling requires a complete adjust in lifestyle and is not just putting a classroom into your home. Homeschooling has its definite disadvantages and it is important that these advantages are thoroughly examined before taking the first step. One of the strongest arguments against homeschooling is the lack of exposure to social situations. Lately, with the advent of homeschooling organizations, it seems this has become less of an issue. Homeschooling organizations organize multiple activities for homeschoolers throughout the school year and social interaction is abundant in most cases. The main disadvantage of homeschooling is that it requires an extremely large commitment on the part of the parent. Also, most parents tend to feel pretty overwhelmed at first, because they are unsure how exactly homeschooling is supposed to be done and may lack the creativity needed to make school interesting for their children. Again, this can be overcome by joining a homeschooling organization.

The advantages of homeschooling far outweigh the disadvantages. The beauty of homeschooling is that parents learn more than their children in the process. Being able to give your child the best instruction as per their needs is one of the primary advantages of homeschooling. Because of this many parents consider homeschooling to be both rewarding and enjoyable. Another great advantage of homeschooling is its adaptability to the student's interests and abilities. Homeschooling also allows the parents to ensure that their children are taught the morals and values they want them to know. For example, Christian families are free to start each day off with a prayer without worrying about the unfortunate public outcry. Homeschooling allows Christian parents who may not be able to afford a private Christian school to teach their children with a biblical foundation. To many, this is the main reason they look to home school as an alternative to our nation’s secular public schools.

Hopefully this discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of homeschooling has given you the insight you need to make an informed decision. As discussed above, the decision to home school is one of the most significant decisions you will make during your child’s life and if you do decide that homeschooling is for you make sure you have thoroughly researched the topic and examined all of the possible issues.
